Malaysian Corpus Research Network

A society of researchers in the field of corpus linguistics and applied linguistics.

Our story

Welcome to MCRN

What is the Malaysian Corpus Research Network?

The Malaysian Corpus Research Network (MCRN) was mooted at the Malaysia Corpus Research Colloquium held at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 2012 with the objective of providing a platform for corpus linguists in Malaysia to network, share information and collaborate.  Following more discussions at the Malaysia Corpus Research Symposium organized by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 2015, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2018 and the recent one which was organized by UiTM Shah Alam in December 2020, it was decided that the best way to achieve the objective of MCRN is through a website that pools together information on corpus researchers, activities and projects, corpora, and publications on corpus research in Malaysia.  It will also serve as a platform for enquiries and discussions regarding corpus research matters in Malaysia and related issues.

The MCRN, through the website, therefore, aims to:

  1. connect researchers who are interested in corpora and corpus research, particularly in Malaysia, through workshop and seminar series.
  2. increase the visibility of local corpus researchers and their research
  3. be the hub of information on language corpora developed in Malaysia.
  4. be a repository of publications on corpus research in Malaysia.

Given the aims of MCRN, researchers in the field of corpus linguistics and those working/interested in corpus research, are welcome to join the network as a member, by adding your details in the members’ section.  This information is the first step towards the creation of a directory of corpus linguists that will help connect researchers around the country.

To give Malaysian corpus researchers and their research visibility, the website will feature a section on projects where members can post information on their corpus research. In relation to this, the website will also be publicizing upcoming events which include webinar, workshop, or conference hosted by MCRN or by other members.

To centralise information on all available corpora in the country, there will be a section on a directory of corpora with links to those that are accessible online.  This will be invaluable to local and international researchers who require corpus data on languages in the country. To further foreground corpus researchers and their work, a directory of publications on corpus research in the country will be created.
